As spring fights to return to our Lake Michigan beachfront Naturalist Carolyn Rock announces the upcoming  schedule of events for our neighbors at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Thank you to park Naturalist Carolyn Rock. Here are the upcoming events at the Dunes:

April 27, 2013
Bird Exploration.
Join amateur birders Bill and Sarah Krouse for a morning of birding.  This adult focused program will allow participants to explore a variety of habitats for migrating birds.  Meet at the nature center for this longer program.  Dress for the weather. 7:30am

May 4, 2013
Work Play Dune Day.
Grab your rake, put on your gloves, and join the park staff and Friends of Whitefish Dunes for a day of sprucing up the park.  Bring your friends and family for a whole day, morning or afternoon of fun.  Crews of all levels of ability, strengths and ages are needed.  Children under the ages of 16 must work with a parent.  Inside and outdoor work available, there is something for everyone.  Lunch provided for those who sign up.  Morning session begins at 9:00am.  Lunch is at noon and the afternoon session begins at 1:00pm. Spring Exploration.
Join Dale and Mary Goodner for an exploration of nature.  Through stories and science learn about the flora and fauna found along the rocky shores, forest floor and sunny openings.  Gather for this meandering walk that is short in distance but full of discoveries.  Walk begins at the Nature Center. 10:00am

As the new year looms on the horizon, we are happy to announce the January schedule of events for our beachfront neighbors at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Thank you to park Naturalist Carolyn Rock. Here are the upcoming events at the Dunes:

January 19, 2013
Quiet Side Bird Exploration.
Join amateur birders Bill and Sarah Krouse for a morning of winter lakeshore birding. Begin at Whitefish Dunes to learn the basics of winter bird watching (with refreshments) then carpool to various hot birding spots (Cave Point, Jacksonport, Baileys Harbor…).  The group will travel northward before returning to the park.  Depending on current birding information, travels may take the group to different sites than listed.  Dress warmly, bring water and snack.  Trip may include a stop for lunch if birding provides to be extremely successful.  Don’t forget to bring funds; trip participants receive 15% all bird books at the park store.

January 26, 2013
Candlelight Ski/Walk.
Come join the Friends of Whitefish Dunes State Park to enjoy their annual candlelight event. Separate trails will be available for hikers and skiers.  The shelter features a warming fire along with hot beverages and popcorn.  Over 2 miles of trails will be lit by luminaries.  Park Entrance fee will be waived for this event.  Please leave your pet at home, they are not allowed on the trails or in the shelter building.
5:00 – 9:00pm

Sturgeon Bay’s Harvest Moon Festival Celebrates Fall in Door County

The Sturgeon Bay Harvest Moon Festival is an annual favorite around here. From the Door County Advocate:

The streets will be filled with the Old Bolts Car show, art and craft vendors and the retired greyhounds meet and greet. Live music during the day will include Inkapirka from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., DJ Michael Raye from 9 a.m. to noon, Hot Off the Grill from noon to 5p.m. and Ronnie Nyles from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

….The Harvest Moon Celebration will take place on South Third Avenue in front of the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center Office featuring an evening of bidding at the street art auction at 6 p.m., followed by dancing in the streets with music by Cold Hard Cash until 11 p.m.

There will also be a street art raffle – sturgeon bay sturgeons – for you to enjoy. Check out photos of this year’s art at https://www.facebook.com/sturgeonbay.

Plus a late addition to the festival: Master bluesman Chris Aaron will be playing on the corner of 3rd Ave and Michigan from 2:30-5pm!

Fossil Finds.  Come explore the rocky shoreline for signs of life from long ago.  Discover what life was like, the environment it lived in and the cool critters.  Meet at the amphitheater for this family friendly program.

Snakes.  Drop by the amphitheater to explore some of Wisconsin’s snakes.  Learn about the snakes’ legends and lore.

Dressing for the Outdoors. While hiking, playing in the sand, or swimming there are many different places to prepare for at the Dunes.  Prepare for the outdoors by dressing up Ranger Steve.  For some dress up fun, come drop by the amphitheater. 10:00am-12:00pm.

Gyotaku – Fish Printing.  Discover the ancient art of Gyotaku (fish printing).  Create a wearable work of art that has fish swimming all over it.  Bring a 100% cotton item or purchase a shirt or bag at the park to print on.  Drop in between 10am and 12:00pm to participate in this great hands-on nature event.  Printing cost of $5 or purchase a shirt/bag for $5.  Play Match Your Catch to learn Wisconsin fish.  Program located at the shelter building.  10:00 – 12:00.

March Comes in Like a Lamb….

I hope the old adage is not true that if March comes in like a lamb it goes out like a LION!  Even since the  last set of snow pictures were posted on the site we have had more snow!  The new view from our pool area is one of this overgrown drift that seems to remind us that winter is not quite done yet!

Well if winter is not done yet we might as well have more winter fun-Right?  All snowmobile trails and cross country ski trails are open and in good condition.   There’s still some time to enjoy a sleigh ride with the Door County Trolley’s Winter Wonderland Tour.   Take advantage of a remarkable deal when you stay at beautiful Glidden Lodge and add the Winter Wonderland package to your stay!

WOW we have hit the jackpot with a February warm up.  Lake Michigan waves are gently rolling in and the sun shining on the water looks like a spring day!!!  The upcoming forecast seems to be very good for the weekend Fire and Ice Festival in Sturgeon Bay this weekend where ice sculpters will be braving the elements to carve out a work of art.  Later there will be dancing and entertainment.  Come on up and check it out!!!  We still have rooms available!!!
