And Now…from Whitefish Dunes State Park

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

From Whitefish Dunes State Park naturalist Carolyn Rock:

Saturday, February 18
9:00 – 12:00am Quiet Side Bird Exploration
Join amateur birders Bill and Sarah Krouse for a morning of winter lakeshore birding. Begin at Whitefish Dunes to learn the basics of winter bird watching (with refreshments) then carpool to various hot birding spots (Cave Point, Jacksonport, Baileys Harbor…).  The group will travel northward before returning to the park.  Depending on current birding information, travels may take the group to different sites than listed.  Dress warmly, bring water and snack.  Trip may include a stop for lunch if birding provides to be extremely successful.  Don’t forget to bring funds; trip participants receive 15% all bird books at the park store.

The hike from Glidden Lodge Beach Resort to Whitefish Dunes State Park (Feb. 4, 2012)

When you stay at the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort in Door County, you have access to 700 feet of Lake Michigan sand beach. However you also have an expanse of sand that you can hike all the way to Whitefish Dunes State Park.

The park has 4.5 miles of winter hiking trails that take you along the water and loops around and above the dunes themselves. Whitefish Dunes State Park is home to eight significant Native American villages, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All trails lead back to a Nature Center featuring displays on the ecology, geology and human history of the park. And while we wish we had more snow for our winter visitors, our close proximity (within walking distance) to this 863 acre gem on the Lake Michigan waterfront makes for an incredibly enjoyable hike on a winter’s day.

Ready for a winter hike on a Door County beach? Contact Glidden Lodge today!

While the dunes themselves are off limits to people, the paths along the beach and back up above the dunes offer spectacular scenery.

YES...this is a photo taken in February, 2012 on the shores of Lake Michigan at Glidden Lodge!

The mild weather this winter has meant Lake Michigan has not frozen over near the shoreline as in most winters previous. That has made for some really great hiking and photo opportunities at the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort in Door County. Check out the photo below from a February 4 hike along their beachfront.
