Glidden Lodge Has Even More to Offer Nature Lovers!!!

May 26th, 2012

We are so excited, here at Glidden Lodge Beach Resort, because the Door County Land Trust just completed the largest conservation project in Door County in almost 50 years by purchasing 483 acres located right across the street from the Lodge.  This parcel hooks up with the Shivering Sands State Natural area already accessible with trails further south on Glidden Drive.

This area has the largest tract of white cedar in the state of Wisconsin and is extremely biologically diverse.  Hopefully there will be marked trails available soon, with the DNR and Land Trust jointly supervising the property.

So far this spring I’ve had the extreme pleasure of going on 4 hikes in the area, with people who have maps, compasses, and knowledge (we did cross some private property also).  A GPS would be a good idea for people striking out on their own.  What a godsend to Glidden Lodge, a place already blessed by Mother Nature.  Nature lovers will have a field day choosing to walk the gorgeous sandy beach of Lake Michigan or the spectacular woods right across the street.

Meet Door County’s Most Impressive Skyscraper

May 16th, 2012

Cana Island Lighthouse has a spiral staircase with 100 stairs to a room with a view.

OK, maybe skyscraper is a bit of an exaggeration. However, at 89 feet in height, the Cana Island Lighthouse is an impressive structure surrounded by amazing scenery. Cana island is an active lighthouse, automated since 1945 and still providing guidance for the vessels that pass by its waters. The structure is also open as a museum and a climb to the top will give you a look at the authentic Fresnel lens that tops the tower.

For details on visiting Cana Island Lighthouse click here. And before you head north to Door County to see the sights, call Glidden Lodge Beach Resort to reserve your suite on their beautiful Lake Michigan sand beach. Call 920-746-3900, 1-866-GLIDDEN or email frontdesk@gliddenlodge.com.

A Love Letter to Our Door County Beach – download it for free!

March 19th, 2012

If you have been a guest at the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort, you know what a treasure our beach is. 700+ feet of gorgeous, sandy Lake Michigan shoreline for our guests to enjoy. Every season of the year. So we decided to create an e-book – the first in a series really – to celebrate our beach and share its’ seasonal beauty with everyone.

Introducing the first in our series: A Door County Beach in Winter. All of our photos were taken in a single day in February 2012 during this very unseasonably warm winter. We got help from our friend Carolyn Rock, the Natural Resource Educator at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Whitefish Dunes is a gem of a park, a mere 3.5 mile hike from Glidden Lodge. Carolyn has been instrumental in helping us care for our beach by keeping invasive plant life at bay and by helping us be guardians of our beach ecosystem. Her input on this project was greatly appreciated.

Our 12 page e-book, created in PDF format, has links to information about the Niagara Escarpement, beachfront plant and animal life and more. And since Cana Island Lighthouse and Cave Point County Park are in the neighborhood, they get a shout out too.

A Door County Beach in Winter is the first of four e-books starring our beach. Look for the spring edition in late May. And we invite you to personally experience our beach – contact us today for a great spring deal!

Tony Gebauer of TR Pottery. Photos courtesy of ppulse.com and trpottery.com

From the Peninsula Pulse:

Potter Tony Gebauer will demonstrate techniques for creating large ceramic pots on the wheel on the first three Saturdays in March from 1 – 3 pm…

“These special demonstrations are an opportunity for us to share the technique and answer questions about the process,” said Gebauer. “Also, it gives us something else to focus on during the winter and provides an opportunity for folks to stop by to visit…

TR Pottery is a working studio and gallery located in downtown Fish Creek on Main Street next to The Cookery restaurant. The gallery will be open the first three Saturdays in March from 10 – 5 pm.

Add that to the list of reasons to visit Door County in the month of March. And while you’re at it include a weekend at the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort on that list of reasons too. The hike from Glidden Lodge Beach Resort to Whitefish Dunes State Park (Feb. 4, 2012)

When you stay at the Glidden Lodge Beach Resort in Door County, you have access to 700 feet of Lake Michigan sand beach. However you also have an expanse of sand that you can hike all the way to Whitefish Dunes State Park.

The park has 4.5 miles of winter hiking trails that take you along the water and loops around and above the dunes themselves. Whitefish Dunes State Park is home to eight significant Native American villages, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All trails lead back to a Nature Center featuring displays on the ecology, geology and human history of the park. And while we wish we had more snow for our winter visitors, our close proximity (within walking distance) to this 863 acre gem on the Lake Michigan waterfront makes for an incredibly enjoyable hike on a winter’s day.

Ready for a winter hike on a Door County beach? Contact Glidden Lodge today!

While the dunes themselves are off limits to people, the paths along the beach and back up above the dunes offer spectacular scenery.
